The Mathematics discipline at Shenzhen University was established in 1983. In 1996, the Mathematics Education Department was established within the College of Teacher Education, followed by the establishment of the Mathematics Department within the College of Science in 1998. In 2006, these two departments were merged to create the College of Mathematics and Computational Science, which was renamed the College of Mathematics and Statistics in 2015, and further renamed as the College of Mathematical Sciences in 2023. The college remains committed to its original mission of nurturing talents for the party and the country and always keeps in mind the fundamental task of fostering moral character and educating students.
The college actively serves national major strategic needs such as the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The college has established a high-level research and teaching faculty and plays a pivotal role in training top-notch talents in basic mathematics.
The college consists of four departments: the Department of Basic Mathematics, the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Information and Computational Science, and the Department of Statistics. It offers one doctoral program in mathematics, two master's programs in mathematics and statistics, and one professional master's program in applied statistics. The college also provides three undergraduate programs: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computational Science, and Statistics, with the Information and Computational Science program being recognized as a national-level first-class undergraduate program. The college has established research platforms including the National Tianyuan Mathematics Southeast Center - Shenzhen University, Shenzhen National Applied Mathematics Center - Shenzhen University, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (National) Applied Mathematics Center - Shenzhen Branch, Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Center for High-Definition Video Intelligent Analysis and Processing, Shenzhen Modern Machine Learning and Application Key Laboratory, and Shenzhen University Mathematical Research Institute. It has become a high-level base for mathematical scientific research and talent cultivation.
The college has a strong and well-qualified faculty comprising 98 full-time teachers, including 20 professors, 47 associate professors, and 18 doctoral supervisors. Among them, three have received the National Outstanding Youth Foundation, two have been selected for the Ministry of Education's Yangtze River Scholars Incentive Program, three have received the National Excellent Youth Foundation, two enjoy special allowances from the State Council, one has won the Zhong Jiaqing Mathematics Award, one is a top-notch young talent in the Pearl River Talent Plan, and several are high-level talents in Shenzhen. The college has made remarkable research achievements in fields such as complex analysis, partial differential equations theory and computation, operations research and optimization, algebra and number theory, statistics, information science, and interdisciplinary applications over the past decade. In the last ten years, the college has presided over 94 National Natural Science Foundation projects, three major key projects, two key projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and over a hundred provincial and municipal research projects, with a total research funding of nearly 100 million RMB. It has published over 800 papers in high-level domestic and international academic journals such as J.Eur. Math. Soc. Adv. in Math, and China Science.
The college places a high emphasis on teaching and research. In recent years, it has been granted 14 provincial-level and above research and teaching reform projects, published (including revised) more than ten textbooks, reference books, and monographs, among which two were selected as "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" and "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" planning textbooks by the Ministry of Education. Three courses have been included in the national first-class undergraduate courses. The guidance provided to students participating in provincial-level and above subject competitions has resulted in nearly 500 awards, including seven national awards and ten provincial awards in mathematics teaching competitions. The college continuously enhances the quality of talent cultivation. Since 1983, it has trained over 4,800 graduates, many of whom have made significant contributions to various fieldsof national development, including outstanding alumni such as Huang Shun, Chen Yiru, and Chen Haiping.
The college is located at the Yuyahai Campus of Shenzhen University, adjacent to the Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park, providing an excellent environment for integration of industry, academia, and research. With a picturesque campus featuring lush greenery, it is an ideal choice for those passionate about mathematical research and dedicated to academic pursuits.
Continuing forward and embarking on dreams, the college will adhere to its motto of "Self-reliance, Self-discipline, and Self-strengthening." It will remain down-to-earth, forge ahead, actively serve the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, and tirelessly strive for the construction of a first-class, high-level mathematical discipline.
